GONZO FILMMAKING
by feeding on fever ([info]soulfluff)
at March 17th, 2010 (10:29 pm)

Once a screenplay is complete, the screenwriter must face a terrible fact: all his work is for shit unless somebody makes it into a movie. The screenwriter now has two choices. He or she can either make the movie themselves, or sell their screenplay to somebody who will make it for them. Many screenwriters opt to make the movie themselves. All they need is a camera and two or more actors willing to have sex with each other. This style of moviemaking is called "Gonzo" filmmaking. Many screenplays are unsuitable for Gonzo filmmaking, but after a few rewrites, any script can make for good porno flick. The first things to go are the plot and anything that might involve special effects. Secondly, character motivations should be changed to "This character wants to have sex." Dialogue should be cut to a minimum as once the actors' clothes are off, they will pretty well improvise all their lines.

I think I've found my niche

If You Wanna Kill a Cow
by N ([info]nadz0r)
at March 17th, 2010 (11:31 pm)

After my last depressing entry, I thought perhaps I should talk about less...morbid things. I still can't believe it though and I still think about death probably too much. I guess this is only a natural reaction when these things are happening around you.

My ankle is coming along quite well. I can run (awkwardly, slowly and not for very far), jump (again, awkwardly, not very high and not very confidently) and move side to side (oooh, you know what comes here). I even went and shot hoops on the weekend - not a game, just some shooting around, a few court 'sprints' (LOL - ok, court jog) and my shot has even improved (maybe my memory isn't what it used to be). I was smiling like a big dork though - being in the open, in the sun, headphones in, on the court on my own and shooting hoops.

Stairs are still really hard and I can't walk long distances. My physio said I should try doing a little bit more with it, to strengthen it up. I just have to make sure I don't push it to the point of pain and do anything too vigorous. After giving it a bit of a shove, I do find it hurts/stiffens up the next morning.

I am utterly and totally obsessed with my ankle. I rub potions into it. I do all my exercises. I assess how it looks, how it feels. It's still puffy. It still hurts me some days. I still walk with a limp occasionally. My physio says that it's still swollen because of the scar tissue. More than anything, I just want to wake up, not THINK about my ankle and PLAY BASKETBALL.

It's been almost 2 months since I played. This makes me incredibly sad.

In other news, I think PSFG has made some good progress. I guess it better have, considering I haven't been doing cardio. I have had a LOT on at work, so the gym has been harder to get to. And some days my ankle hurts too much and I just go home. Either way, I am trying to hold the motivation down and am looking forward to setting some massive screens on some poor unsuspecting guy when I get back. BOOM!!!

In other basketball news, a new guy has started at work and he's asked around about the basketball team. I emailed him asking him his height and playing experience. YES, this is for a WORK lunchtime team. Happily though, he wrote back obliging me with his stats (6'3) and his history. Because we're a few players short on Friday, I asked if he wanted to fill in and jokingly said only if he a) dunked b) boxed out and c) grabbed the boards. With the qualifier that 2 out of 3 will be sufficient.

He wrote back to say the last time he dunked was early last year, but he reckons he can get back up to it soon. OMG, we have to give him a run first to see how he fits in with the team and then there's also the issue that we have TOO many guys in the team if he joins - but this could be the big of my dreams to make my work team unstoppable! We're all trying not to get too excited about it. The guys asked me to report back on whether he 'looked fit' (lol, I went down to 'meet' him/scope him out on the pretence of giving him a singlet). Needless to say, I reported back on everything I learnt - right down to which team he supports and who his favourite player is.

:D I love that my team is so serious about this game too.

I just want to play!!

===

In other exciting news, my beautiful Juanzo is home this Tuesday!!!! Oh my!! I miss him so much, I can't wait to pick him up from the airport. We're not going to do too much, just hang out, play tunes together, cook and maybe try and find a place to buy. Yay!!!!

I was hoping to take a few weeks off work, but stuff at the office is a bit bananas. So I will probably go in for a few days here and there (hopefully) to keep one thing moving. I am just...really hoping to get some time with my baby. He'll be back for 2 weeks only - it's going to go so quick :(

Sydney Ideas Forum: Why Feminism Matters
by penelly ([info]penelly)
at March 17th, 2010 (07:44 pm)

This looks like it'll be really good. :)

Why Feminism Matters
Monday 22 March, 6.30pm start
Seymour Centre, University of Sydney

Compared with 30 years ago women are now better represented in politics but there is still more to be done. Hillary Clinton and Julia Gillard are examples of women gaining important leadership positions, but not the top job. So how far have women come in terms of political leadership and shaping the public policy agenda? Do men and women do politics differently? Do women have different interests to men and how should these be incorporated into political decision-making? How might contemporary feminism contribute to improving women's position in politics.

This forum will include leading international political scientists along with Australian academics and researchers in a robust discussion on the state of contemporary feminism. They will debate issues of women's representation in politics in leading Western Liberal democracies including the US, UK and Australia.

The Sydney Ideas forum titled "Why Feminism Matters" marks the month of International Women's Day.

In what promises to be a fascinating and robust discussion, the panel will debate the different approaches taken by men and women in politics, the impact women have had in shaping public policy and the political agenda in recent decades, and the role feminism plays in politics today.

The panel includes top commentators and political scholars including: Professor Mary Fainsod Katzenstein (Government at Cornell University ), Dr Fiona Mackay (Director of the Graduate School of Social and Political Science at the University of Edinburgh), Professor Karen Beckwith (Department of Political Science at Case Western Reserve University), Dr Sue Goodwin* (Faculty of Education and Social Work, University of Sydney) and Rebecca Huntley (Australian social researcher and Sydney alumni). The panel will be chaired by broadcaster and former Olympic swimmer Lisa Forrest.

Cost: $20 Adults/$15 Concession
(free for Sydney Uni staff, I think!)

* Sue is one of my colleagues and she was telling me some of the things she will talk about and asking for my opinions. Fun!

GetUp! campaign: closure of electoral rolls
by penelly ([info]penelly)
at March 17th, 2010 (10:20 am)

GetUp! are running a campaign to encourage Senator Steven Fielding to vote for a Bill that will reverse the stupid changes the Howard government made to the electoral system. Basically, they changed it so that once an election is called, Australians eligible to vote have only until 8pm that day to enrol/register to vote. It used to be 7 days. And the current bill is proposing it go back to that system.

Some of you may know about this already but I think it's an important campaign. It only takes a couple of moments to bash out a quick email to Steve Fielding, via the GetUp! site, or you could email or phone him directly. His vote is crucial on this issue.

From the GetUp site:

Here are some talking points you may find helpful for your phone call:
# This Wednesday, Steven Fielding has the deciding vote on whether Australians will have a week to get on the electoral roll, or just hours after an election is called.

# Hundreds of thousands of Australians may miss their chance to vote this year - over 5 electorates worth!

# The AEC tells us that in 2007 only 17,208 Australians enroled or updated their details by 8pm on the day election writs were issued (which could be the deadline this year) - compared to 423,975 in the old 7 day period in 2004.

# Those most affected by this are Australians who move house often, or don’t have drivers’ licenses: young families, Indigenous, migrant and poorer Australians.

# The Australian Electoral Commission have argued that these changes will better allow them to do their job of maintaining the electoral roll.

I don't really understand the reasons the Howard government had for changing it in the first place. I can only think that they wanted to deliberately exclude those mostly likely to be affected by this. What other reason could there be?

The details about the bill:
Tonight the Senate will debate the Electoral and Referendum Amendment (Close of Rolls and Other Measures) Bill 2010. There are 6 schedules in the bill, but the most controversial and important is Schedule 1. Schedule 1 will allow Australians to enrol to vote, or change their enrolment details (address etc.) 7 days after the election writs are issued (usually the day the election is called), rather than by 8pm on that day. The Opposition is against Schedule 1, but the Greens, Independent Senator Nick Xenophon, and the Government are for. If Steve Fielding announces he is for schedule 1, it will be possible to amend and pass the bill - if he is against, the whole bill will almost certainly fail.

I urge you to follow this link and send a quick email to Senator Fielding.

Womad
by Silkegirl *whoooosh* ([info]sillyheart)
at March 17th, 2010 (12:58 am)

Let me just throw in some of the highlights of Womad:

  • Dancing with Gareth. I may well have danced more in those 3 days than in my entire previous life and while I am clumsy and uncoordinated, constantly near a panic attack from being nervous and feeling rather ugly, I loved it so much and want to practise moving in better ways. I also liked hanging out with Gareth full stop. A lot of the great things about Womad, for me, are memories connected closely to hanging out with Gareth. I was a bit down when him, Dim, Narz and Miriam left early on Sunday.

  • Road tripping with James. Great conversations, awesome landscape, fantastic music!

  • Having Josh in my tent. I hate sleeping in a tent alone but that's all I ever got in recent times. It's way warmer and because I'm not afraid with someone else, I actually sleep. Also just the fact of having Josh there was nice. He has become a good friend, so glad to have him around.

  • Calexico. Oh my god. The awesomeness. I already liked them after I first heard them for the first time on Saturday. But then I ran into their workshop, which I liked even more and then interview time came up and all of a sudden you sit there with those really rather awfully funny and handsome men and I was pretty much instantly smitten. Particularly Joey. Well hello. We got to chat after the press conference and twice he just took my hand and the last time he held it quite long and looked me right into the eyes saying it had been lovely to meet me. My butterflies are definitely swarming around someone else right now, but I melted a bit, right there. What a nice man. Later they played again and I was standing behind a fence, taking photos and filming parts of the show. They saw me from stage, made eye contact and at some point they smiled, pointed and waved. How nice. And later I remembered how they recorded an album with Lisa Germano and was kicking my own butt for not asking. I just love her, that's all.
They also gave me the best concert moment when they played with babylon Circus. Fucking awesome. How the gala should have been!

  • Ojos De Brujo, also SO nice! Seemed so sweet, we didn't even get to talk, just from the press conference they seemed to like me and from then on were super sweet whenever they saw me around, incl shoulder patting etc. Their rapper and percussionist was lovely.

  • Seeing the Bellbirds with Gareth was my musical highlight. They're getting better and better and sitting in the front row being able to sing along songs that haven't even been recorded properly yet, made me feel geeky, and I realized that I've seen them live a number of times now - and love them. Had a fun interview with Sean, Don and Victoria. The latter is responsible for fart jokes, apparently. They're all so lovely!

  • More dancing! With Ben this time, as in Jeremy's and Jenny's Ben. Ben is one cool kid! Also funny, when James and I sat with them and Ben kept stealing James's hat and throwing it away for him to get. Good times!

  • Seeing Mahmoud Ahmed of Ethiopiques. Bloody awesome! Legend!

  • The Dub Colossos work shop, incl Ethiopian scales and shoulder dancing. Inspiring.

  • Skatalites, yet another huge legend! What a priviledge to chat to them! And dance to them!

  • Lowlight: The gala was lamesauce imho. I was tired and cold and they were just not really celebrating Womad. So I left and went to bed early.

  • I'm a tough cookie and coped with my torn out piece of bone from my ankle. Was painful but okay in Doc Martens, but when I foolishly thought it'd be a great idea to wear jandals, that really was no good at all. Huge pain followed. People would have seen me pull weird faces all the time and go ow ow ow.

  • The Nortec Collective. FAAAAAR OUT, soooooooo awesome, music, show everything! Was announced as downbeat first but ha, no way!

  • Jeremy asking me if I lost weight as he hardly recognized me. :)

  • Josh saying that this weekend was the highlight of his summer. I gave him the ticket. To be able to give someone something that's the highlight of his summer makes me very happy

Could write a small novel on all of this. People made it. Beautiful music, great weather, laughing, dancing, noticing how I can run up and down hills without being much out of breath, except for the moaning about the ankle. It was an amazing weekend!

Just a quickie. Taken when walking in the forest last monday (Cedar Brush creek) during a break from my eco course excursion. A day fullof wonder and surprises. I saw white flashing between the green trees and within moments this white horse was rushing towards me....it was a magical moment and somehow we connected for a second or two. Actually it lasted longer. After posting the pics on flickr a friend said this particular shot reminded him of the Unicorn in Bladerunner. I'd seen it so long ago....had to utube it. Anyhow, except for the horn, it sure does.
